Record Store Day - one of the biggest annual events on the music calendar - returned last Saturday with hundreds of vinyl enthusiasts descending upon Stroud’s three(!) independent record stores Sound Records, Trading Post and Klang Tone Records to get their hands on this year’s run of limited edition RSD releases and dig through freshly stocked crates featuring thousands of records covering every genre under the musical sun.

As well as coveted vinyl a multitude of in store events also took place throughout the day into the early evening featuring live performances, in store DJ sets and exhibitions. At Sound Records DJ’s from midday included DJ Fade, Heavy-T, Harry-G and Jake Beefy followed by live sets from some of the South West’s finest hip hop artists; Griz-O, Bro, Skunkadelic, Layman, Dutty Goonz, Spokesmao and J Chalks. Round the corner at Trading Post twelve DJ’s performed various sets from 8 o’clock in the morning including the likes of Neil Arthur from Blancmange, Keith Allen, Situation Sound, Neil ‘Dubbu’ Wilson, Will ‘Mendoza’ Cookson, Tom Savage, Andy Edwards, Nadine ‘DJ Spooky’ Phillips, Mz Monique, Danny Toft, Steve Brown and the Donnelly Sisters. Further up the road at Klang Tone Records Ten Hyphen Twenty brought forth a set of live electronic soundscapes and the shop also featured an exhibition by Oliver Swanston.

Record Store Day - one of the biggest annual events on the music calendar - returns this Saturday 22nd April and two of Stroud’s independent record stores have been busy over the last few week’s ordering a hoard of ltd edition RSD releases. The third will also be participating - albeit in a different way…

All three have brought forth a multitude of events for the day including live performances, DJ sets, exhibitions, discounts and much more.

We asked Tom Berry from Sound Records, Simon Vincent from Trading Post and Sean Roe from Klang Tone Records to recommend some of those RSD releases, some not RSD releases and what they’ve got going on instore for the day…

SOUND RECORDS

“Sound Records marks Record Store Day 2023 with a showcase of some of the finest hip-hop talent Gloucestershire has to offer. Various local MCs & DJs will be in store dropping tracks throughout the afternoon with support from local DJs including Fade, Jake B Kirton and Tom Lowrie (Heavy-T). The songs on this release were recorded by Pixies in March 1987 and were included in what has come to be known by diehard fans as ‘The Purple Tapes’.
2. Blur Presents The Special Collectors Edition
2LP pressed on coloured vinyl, featuring a collection of B-sides taken from the of their first three studio albums.
3. Pixies: Doolittle Live In Brussels 2009
Captures the band’s complete show in Brussels in 2009, newly remixed by Tom Dalgety from the soundboard multi-tracks.
4. The Prodigy: Invaders Must Die Remixes
A special remix version of The Prodigy’s 4th album ‘ Invaders Must Die’, their 4th consecutive UK No. 1 studio album (2009).
5. Pearl Jam: Give Way
Recorded during Pearl Jam’s Melbourne Park show on March 5, 1998 during the Australian tour in support of their 3rd studio album Yield, the highly sought after Give Way released on vinyl for the first time.
6. David Bowie: Laughing With Liz: - The Vocalion And Deram Singles 1964 - 1967
Bowie's early Deram singles collected in a 7" box for the very first time

As a shop I don’t fulfil the criteria to join…I have been saving some of the best items that have come in to Klang Tone over the 6 months -so when I open the shop on Saturday 22 April, I will put out 500 astonishingly good records - some hard to find items amongst them . A jamboree of sounds from around the world! NO RSD STOCK WHATSOEVER! I’m opening at 7am - the early bird will get some Ear Worms! 1. Five Days Rain S/T
UK four piece who recorded an album in 1970 that never saw an official release at the time and which took some 20 years to resurface. They blend psychedelic rock and folk - hey it was recorded in 1970!
2. Googoosh: Finders Keepers Comp
Iran’s best kept secret - performer of some of the “rarest and unheard heart melting pop music in the world” say the liner notes. Banned after the 1979 revolution her songs were spread and preserved by cassette exchanges.
3. Sonny Sharrock : Ask The Ages
This is the 2019 reissue on Hive Mind - originally issued on CD only in 1991. This lp features Pharaoh Sanders and Elvin Jones in devastatingly good form This must be played loud to be appreciated!
4. Marvin Gaye: What’s Going On
This 2021 repress is so beautifully packaged - The music is beautifully mixed -incredible attention to detail. Sides 3 and 4 feature mono versions and stripped down re-edits.
5. Bombay S Jayashri : Shravanam
One of classical Indian vocalist “Bombay” Jayashri Ramnath’s most mesmerising works. Revered as one of the greatest living exponents of Carnatic music. Unusually this record is reverse cut-plays from the inside to the edge..
6. Maria McKee: You Gotta Sin To Get Saved
A bit of a forgotten second solo lp . This is darker and rockier than her previous country tinged outing. Features two Van Morrison covers. Rare 1993 original pressing

That’s The Umlauts there, attempting to describe the matrix-like myriad of influences that they’ve somehow managed to gel together to create the beguiling sounds of their new EP, Another Fact. Although The Umlauts’ genesis is in Stroud, thanks to songwriting partners Alfred Lear and Oliver Offord, the addition of visual artists Annabelle Mödlinger and Maria Vittoria Faldini as lyricists and vocalists, after meeting at art college in London, blew the group wide open in terms of what they could do creatively. As such, Ü’s tightly hewn mix of mechanical synth-pop, spiky no wave and bristling post-punk bore the hallmarks of a band exhilaratingly committing ideas as quickly as they could have them. His work can be heard on over two hundred solo, collaborative and compilation releases. London-based multi-instrumentalist musician, composer and producer. He collaborated with Bernie Kruase at The Great Animal Orchestra exhibition at Foundation Cartier in Paris and in 2019 he released a series of Wake up Calls, pieces composed entirely from recordings of endangered British birds. Gallery Pangolin Presents: Jon Buck : March of Mutability
Following Jon Buck’s successful 2019 exhibition Time of Our Lives, a major body of work shown across both Pangolin Galleries, Gallery Pangolin and The Museum in the Park have teamed up to present a new exhibition entitled ‘March of Mutability’. This show will include a group of new sculptures relating to contemporary theories of evolution, alongside prints and drawings. Buck draws inspiration from a wide range of historical and contemporary scientific and anthropological sources; his work explores primary patterns derived from the natural world. They embellish the surfaces of his sculptures implying that this diversity requires conserving.

An exhibition celebrating the magic of the landscape and our connection with nature through a colourful and playful exploration created by Stroud based illustrator Hatty Staniforth and moving-image artist Katherine Glynne-Jones who are both part of the Let’s Create Stuff collective. Footage captured on walks in Stroud forms the basis for 12 prints by Hatty and also a short video piece by Katherine, which can be found at @okletscreatestuff. Following on from the very successful launch event held in June this year, the Stroud Art Fair returns on Saturday 28th August outside the Sub Rooms. A similar number of stall holders are on show but this time they will also be using the George Exhibition Room inside the Sub Rooms to extend the event. Since the organisers began the concept of starting the non profit making Stroud Artists Cooperative they now have 51 different local artists from a diverse genre, age and ability who have signed up to exhibiting on the square and participating in the group. Sound Records Launches New Record Label

Sound Records have just announced the launch of a new record label with the release of Patched In: Sounds of Underground Stroud, a compilation of electronic music from the town and includes tracks by Blancmange vocalist Neil Arthur, Mermaid Chunky and Orbury Common amongst others.

Profits from the record are raising funds for local music venue, the Prince Albert, which was recently one of just four UK pubs featured on Tom Kerridge’s BBC show Saving Britain’s Pubs.

Upon the launch of the label, Sound Records co-proprietor Sean Roe said “It’s been a fantastic 3 years for Sound Records and launching a label of the music we love has been a long held dream.”

“We've got such a wealth of talent in Stroud from Mermaid Chunky to Simon McCorry so it’s great to be able to give them this platform while supporting the Prince Albert as well” Tom Berry, Sound Records

The record is released in September and can be pre-ordered via their recently launched crowdfunder here.

The record comes with line notes by music journalist Rupert Howe and sleeve design by Adam Hinks (Good On Paper). The record features exclusive tracks and will only be available in the vinyl format.

The pandemic has flipped the creative industries on their heads, seriously risking the future of our music, arts and performance professionals, The Subs has been forced to adapt, and fast.

The result? We went big, and decided to take Stroud to a global audience – so we could spread some joy, bring comfort to those struggling – and most importantly help preserve the future of Stroud’s beautiful venue, bring some much needed income to our local (WORLD CLASS) creative community, and spread the word – we’re unbelievably #proudtobestroud

And so with a lot of blood, sweat and tears, and the help of the Rob James from Topo Productions – our new GLOBAL live streaming channel subs@home was born.

In response to this challenge we’ve created a programme for you to enjoy in the comfort of your own home together with Jazz Stroud and Deepbed...But we’re not talking DJs in front of their sofas (although that was great, thank you), we’ve actually created a TV studio, complete with an actual production gallery, 7 cameras, a director, floor manager, and cameramen.

And the most special thing? The set for our new studio is Jack Wimperis’ Everything Is Light exhibition – a proper slick set-up…

In return for at least 60 minutes of spectacular, intimate performances, all we ask is for a minimum donation of £5 to support The Subs, pay our musicians and our tech teams.

There are few sights more thrilling than a gathering or murmuration of starlings, watching hundreds of birds swarm together at dusk creating something greater than the sum of its parts…

Such a scene has provided an unlikely inspiration to Australian songwriter and Stroud resident Emily Barker. Having witnessed such a phenomenon while sat in sand dunes on the coast in her home country she started thinking about migratory birds and the parallels with her own life – going home each year but constantly moving.

A Dark Murmuration of Words is Emily’s latest record and it certainly isn’t afraid to tackle the big issues that face us –the climate emergency and racial inequality are just two topics covered while the lead single The Woman Who Planted Trees is a tribute to Green Belt founder, Wangari Maathai. Yet this is a record that never feels difficult to listen to, the latest stopping off point in a remarkable career that has effortlessly straddled rock, folk, soul and Americana.

Of course, due to current circumstances, Murmuration is not quite getting the release that Emily had originally conceived. For now the bulk of touring will have to wait - although she will be playing the Red Rooster festival in September. She is determined though that this record will have longevity and will be returning to the stage as soon as it is possible and safe to play it live. In the meantime, lockdown has enabled her to ‘strip things out a little’, getting off the treadmill and developing her own projects. One particularly significant avenue she tells me about is writing poetry, some of which will soon be published, another has been her popular Music + Coffee series on Youtube which pairs classic albums with great brews.

Its music however that remains her primary focus. For this record she has worked exclusively with Stroud based musicians and recorded it in a week in Pembrokeshire, rather than Memphis, which provided the setting of her last solo record. Despite this reliance on local talent the playing on the record really is top notch. Drummer Rob Pemberton (ex Low Chimes), bassist Lukas Drinkwater (who also happens to be Emily’s partner) and Pete Roe on keys and guitar perfectly compliment Emily’s songwriting and singing to enable her to shine. This approach sits well with the overall feel of the record that recognises the importance of acting at a local level to begin to influence the wider global situation.

Emily told me about the significant impact that one particular text has had on her own thinking: Doughnut Economics by Kate Raworth, who advocates a much more holistic approach to our time on the planet than the current obsession with economic growth. For Emily the book brought into focus the need to bring all of the issues facing us together to tackle them together. Just one example she says is ‘educating girls being one of the most effective ways of defeating climate change.’

These issues are tackled on perhaps the most striking track on the record Machine. While many of the tracks on Murmuration could fit under the Americana banner, Machine is almost abrasive. Emily herself recognises that the track is some sort of departure but it actually provides an extra dimension to the record which flows perfectly. She admits that she spends ‘many hours agonising over the tracklisting’ and the vinyl and CD versions of the release are programmed slightly differently to compliment the formats. Having previously worked in a record shop herself, Emily recognises the value of the physical album while respecting that much of her audience may stream as well.

For all of the record’s political dimensions, it is actually Emily’s voice that really stands out as the most impressive aspect. As I listened to it I remembered the first time I heard her voice at one of the annual Good on Paper Parties at the Prince Albert. I was cueing up an Eddy Grant record when it hit me. On stage was a woman with a voice like honey, I turned to a friend and just said ‘wow, she’s good!’ That same voice beautifully compliments the gorgeous songs she writes and enables the listener to really engage with the lyrics, something Emily is particularly keen to achieve with Murmuration.

I asked her when she first realised she could sing? It was in a school year 10 graduation event when she sang Aretha Franklin’s Respect that the penny dropped. For the next two decades this particular talent has enabled her to tour the world, collaborate with heroes and record work that will ultimately cement her legacy. Talent is great but it's also clear that in this particular case, it is also accompanied with hard work and an ongoing willingness to learn and innovate that has got Emily where she is today.

This really is a universal record – it will appeal to those who like the current in vogue alt-folk acts such as Laura Marling and This Is The Kit as well as those who most know Emily for her haunting theme for the Wallander TV series. It will appeal to those who want a proper album discussing the big themes of our time but also those who just want great tunes sung well. Emily Barker is a unique talent and we’re very lucky to have her…

SIMON MUNNERY: WHAT AM I?

Andy Holden, artist and curator, presents the first ever art exhibition by legendary alternative comedian Simon Munnery. The exhibition will include paintings, props, jokes, videos and archive material spanning 35 years of stand-up comedy. It will include many of his well-known characters such as Alan Parker: Urban Warrior, with whom Munnery had a cult BBC Radio 1 show, and League Against Tedium, which formed the bases of his BBC 2 television series Attention Scum.Munnery was described by The Scotsman as: ‘The closest that comedy gets to modern art’, and this exhibition will allow visitors to decide for themselves if his eclectic, profound, and humorous endeavors can be considered art, or not. Some of Munnery’s props from his 35 years of performing at the Edinburgh Festival have been transformed into sculptures, and his stick-men drawings that appear in many of his shows will be exhibited. Also on display, is the oil painting which was the center of his most recent Edinburgh stand-up show The Wreath. Munney has had brushes with the world of art before, having collaborated with Banksy on Exit Through the Gift Shop and appearing occasionally as spokesperson for the mysterious graffiti-artist. He also once sold a painting, featuring a joke about the Rolling Stones, to Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones. The exhibition features Alan Parker: Urban Warrior, returning after 25 years to amuse the crowds at Extinction Rebellion. During Alan’s stirring routine, which includes showing the crowd some of his drawings, we see many of the crowd getting arrested. We also witness a funeral, staged by Munnery in his garden, in which he ‘catches the Wreath’. Death, pretentiousness and politics are all scrutinized for jokes, but in the humour something else seeps out, and perhaps that something could be ‘art’? Visit sva.org.uk for further info. 10am 4pm

THEO DEPROOST: LOST IN TIME

An exhibition of photography exploring the secrets of the Museum’s stores. Theo Deproost is a still-life and landscape photographer based in London. He grew up in Stroud and has fond memories of visiting the Museum when it was still in Lansdown. Since 2017, he has been exploring our stored collection and taking photographs, with the aim of sharing some of its weird and wonderful (and usually hidden) artefacts with the wider public. Theo strives for an exploratory and imaginative approach to viewing the world around us. One of his key objectives is to break down a subject to its core components of shape, texture and colour and present it to the viewer in an unconventional and compelling way. In this exhibition you will encounter geological specimens, tropical butterflies and a selection of objects that have been collected by, or donated to, the Museum over the last century. Episode Five: The Shepherd’s Calendar - June - John Clare
Fifth episode of The Thunder Mutters, featuring 'June' from John Clare's 'The Shepherd's Calendar’, performed by Adam Horovitz, and interspersed with tunes from Clare’s tune manuscripts performed by Becky Dellow. All the tunes in this episode have been taken from John Clare's tune manuscript books, and Becky's arrangements used the transcriptions provided by Marion Ross in George Deacon's book John Clare and the Folk Tradition (Sinclair Browne Ltd., 1983). The tunes, whose histories are discussed in the show, are listed here for your convenience, in order of appearance: Jackson’s Morning Brush, Beef Stake Hornpipe, Come to the Bower, Off She Goes, Young Parker, Tink a tink, Regents Fete, The Ploughman. As ‘June’ is shorter than many of the other poems from ‘The Shepherd’s Calendar’, they have also included three further poems by Clare at the outset of the episode. In order of appearance, these are: ‘The Heat of Noon’, ‘Summer Happiness’ and Wild Bees’. The Thunder Mutters’ theme tune is ‘The Gardengate’ from John Clare’s tune manuscript book.

Happy Hour Mixtape - Dubbu and Fidel Cutstro

In celebration of all the amazing work the Prince Albert have put into the local community and Stroud music scene over the past 21 years local DJ’s Fidel Cutstro and Neil ‘Dubbu’ Wilson are releasing a Happy Hour mixtape with all the proceeds going directly to the renowned venue.

Featuring artwork by Adam Hinks (Good On Paper/Hidden Notes) the mixtape is a throwback to the days when a TDK C90 and a ghetto blaster were all you needed to have a party! The days of the stop/start recording of Top of The Pops off the radio on a Sunday evening and placing sellotape over the tape ends to re-record the following week….“We have created this exclusive Prince Albert mixtape as a nod to those nostalgic times and their own love of this musical format, but more importantly it’s been created as a Thank You to the wonderful work that the Prince Albert have done over the last decade (and more) for the flourishing music scene in Stroud.”explains Neil Wilson.

The mixtape will be available as a limited edition run of cassette tapes as well as a download from princealbertstroud.bandcamp.com on Friday 5th June, “We’ve chosen this date as Bandcamp are again kindly waiving their fees in support of artists during the pandemic which means 100% of the sales will go directly to the Albert.”

Born and raised in the GL5 postcode explains why Dubbu's love for Stroud runs so deep. Having spent his formative years experiencing his parents love for music it was certain that it would feature so heavily in his future. HipHop has always been a mainstay in his musical life and it's where musically his heart lies, although Funk, Soul and Reggae feature heavily in his sets. Having rocked party's all over the country and Stroud for the last 10 years he has also performed at Tramlines Festival in Sheffield and is Keith Allen’s resident DJ for his stage at Latitude Festival in Suffolk, as well as performing at the BBC Cheltenham Jazz Festival.
His now legendary New Years Eve parties at the Prince Albert have always been the highlight of his year and continues to be a sold out event.

DJing since 1993, Cutstro has toured the UK and Europe showcasing his unique and original style. Whether tearing up dancefloors or high level scratch skills, he always brings the funk. In addition to DJing, Cutstro gets busy with production using his trusty MPC and ton of records and recently released his new album Talking in Drums (click here for further info and to read our interview with Fidel) on the Sound The Alarm label to critical acclaim.

To coincide with the release of the Happy Hour mixtape Fidel and Dubbu will also be putting together a special one hour long Good On Paper TV self-recorded-DJ-session this Saturday 6th June playing a selection of tunes from Side A and Side B of the mixtape.
